Gay For Good Los Angeles Hosts 16th Annual Harvey Milk Day of Service at Russell Elementary School

Los Angeles, CA | May 13, 2026 — Gay For Good Los Angeles will host its 16th Annual Harvey Milk Day of Service on Saturday, May 23, bringing volunteers together at Russell Elementary School in Los Angeles for a large-scale campus beautification and restoration project.

The volunteer day will transform school grounds through hands-on service projects designed to create greener, more welcoming spaces for students and staff. Activities will include building raised garden beds, planting shade trees, painting murals and school structures, and supporting campus clean-up and restoration efforts.

The event is hosted in partnership with LAUSD, L.A. Works, LAUSD District 7, Tree People, and the California Climate Action Corps.

This annual Day of Service honors Harvey Milk’s legacy by encouraging community engagement, civic participation, and collective action through volunteer service that directly benefits local neighborhoods and public schools.

“Harvey Milk believed in the power of community and the importance of showing up for one another,” said Anne Friedman, Executive Director of Gay For Good. “This day of service is a reflection of that legacy in action, as volunteers come together to improve a local school and create a more welcoming environment for students.”

The Harvey Milk Day of Service has been an annual tradition for Gay For Good Los Angeles since 2010. Each year, volunteers come together to complete service projects that strengthen communities and expand access to safe, welcoming public spaces.

Gay For Good Los Angeles is part of a national nonprofit that mobilizes LGBTQ+ individuals and allies to engage in hands-on volunteer service projects that support local communities.

Gay For Good recently concluded its first-ever National Week of Service, Pride for the Planet, which united 23 chapters nationwide in environmentally focused volunteer projects.
