  • G4G Boston + Mass Audubon
     August 3, 2024
     10:00 am - 12:00 pm

When: Saturday, August 3 | 10:0am – 12:00pm

Where: Drumlin Farm, 208 S Great Rd, Lincoln, MA 01773

About: With more than 160,000 members and supporters, Mass Audubon protects over 41,000 acres of land throughout Massachusetts, saving birds and other wildlife, and making nature accessible to all.

Farmers at Drumlin Farm grow fifty different types of fruits and vegetables on 30 beautiful acres – everything from kohlrabi to bok choy.  They utilize sustainable farming techniques including crop rotation, winter cover crops, and creative pest control, along with a major focus on soil amendments. No chemical fertilizers, pesticides or insecticides are used. The produce is then sold through their CSA, to downtown restaurants, at the Union Square farmers market, and at their farm stand. They also support local food pantries with weekly vegetable donations. Proceeds from the veggie sales support the sanctuary including nature-based programs for children and families.

Gay for Good volunteers will learn about growing techniques as they help farmers with classic field chores such as mulching, thinning, transplanting, weeding, and harvesting. Keep in mind that farm work is physical and entails kneeling and bending. When chores are done you are welcome to visit the farmyard with the livestock animals or to walk the trails. You can also see the same wonderful view from the top of the drumlin that Henry David Thoreau once wrote about in his journal. At 285 feet it is the highest point around.

What To Bring: Mass Audubon will provide tools, but encourages everyone to bring their own work or gardening gloves. Everyone should wear closed toed shoes (that they don’t mind getting dirty) and socks. People should also bring a water bottle (not optional), a snack, sunscreen and bug spray.

The event will take place rain or shine, save for a major storm or steady rain that would result in dangerous conditions.

This project is limited to 20 people; and, we do encourage carpooling to help with folks traveling from the Boston area.
