Help Open New England’s First LGBTQ Senior Housing Facility

LGBTQ Senior Housing is an organization creating the first LGBTQ welcoming affordable senior housing in New England and they would like our assistance with this historic event! They have acquired the former Barton Rogers School in Hyde Park as the site for their new housing development, which will be called The Pryde and it will bring affordable and safe senior LGBTQ housing to Boston. Click here for their Facebook page

When the school closed in 2014, hundreds of desks, chairs, tables, filing cabinets, shelving units and supplies were left behind and most of these items are still useable. Volunteers will assist in rescuing and organizing furniture and supplies located throughout the building to staging areas where they will be prepared for donation to Boston Public School teachers and staff.  If furniture moving is too labor intensive, they still need our help with sorting books and supplies.

Date: Wednesday, December 22

Time: 1-4PM

Location: The former Barton Rogers School at 15 Everett Street, Hyde Park

There is ample free on street parking, and it is also a 5 minute walk from the Hyde Park commuter rail station (Zone 1) and a 7 minute walk from the Fairmount Commuter Rail Station (Zone 1A). There is even a free municipal lot a half a block away in the off chance there aren’t enough parking spaces.  Click here for transit directions from South Station.

What to wear/bring: Please try to bring gloves and a mask, although they will have some extra to supply us if needed. Please note that this is a 4 story building with no heat so it is recommended to wear sensible footwear and to dress in layers.

Additional Info: We will be working with City Year volunteers and the LGBTQ Senior Housing board members and volunteers. Upon arrival, Gay For Good volunteers should look for G4G chapter lead Steve to check-in and sign a waiver. We kindly request that all volunteers bring a mask.

Depending on feedback from our volunteers, we might grab a bite or a drink together after the event at a nearby establishment. If you do sign up for this event and have any further questions, I will be sending you a reminder email just before the event including my personal phone number, or you can email us at boston@gayforgood.org
