Join G4G Boston and The Friends of Harriet Tubman Park in cleaning and waxing statues and trimming up the garden in this beautiful South End Park.

Date: Saturday, September 21, 2024
Time: 9am – 12pm
Meet location: Harriet Tubman Park in Boston’s South End (opposite 469 Columbus Avenue)

Volunteer Slots: 12 G4G volunteers

G4G Chapter Project Coordinator: Carey

What we will be doing: We will be washing and waxing these two beautiful bronze statues. As time allows, we will also do some pruning and trimming of plants in the small park and rake the gravel areas.

Transport and Parking: Harriet Tubman Park sits in the heart of Boston’s historic South End neighborhood.  The park is located at the intersection of Columbus Ave. and Pembroke St.  It is easily accessible by public transportation via the MBTA Orange Line (Back Bay or Mass. Ave.), Purple Line (Back Bay) or Green Line (Copley Sq.) as well as numerous bus routes. There is limited street parking in the area.

Additional Information:

  • Dress in weather-appropriate clothing that can get a little dirty and maybe a little wet.
  • If you have a pair of garden gloves and a garden trimmer (for cutting ivy) please bring them, but otherwise all tools and materials will be provided. Bring water and snacks if you want them.

About our Partner:

Harriet Tubman Park was the first park in Boston with a statue honoring a woman.  It is one of the few, maybe the only, park in the country with statues by two African-American women artists: Fern Cunningham and Meta Warrick Fuller. The Friends of Harriet Tubman Park are a dedicated group of (mostly) South Enders who work closely with the Parks Department to care for the park and its statues.
