Volunteering at Gay Day at the Zoo

G4G DC will have the 10am–noon shift supporting Gay Day at the Zoo (GDATZ) is on Sunday, May 5, which is International Family Equality Day (IFED). The event is a collaboration between the Zoo, DC Center for the LGBTQ+ Community, SMYAL, and Rainbow Families. Activities include rainbow animal enrichments, and family fun and games with SMYAL and Rainbow Families, such as a scavenger hunt, family picnic, and field games. The DC Center will have a table where we also have information about the organizations, buttons, and rainbow stuff (One important note for volunteers is that we will be volunteering with the DC LGBTQ+ Center, not with the Zoo.)

G4G Volunteers are needed to welcome people, hand out GDATZ buttons, flyers, direct people to where SMYAL and Rainbow Families are having their activities, and help with field games.

The zoo is super-supportive, and for some of the young people it’s their first “Pride” event, so it’s a very cool event to be part of. We get a lot of local visitors, and since it’s the National Zoo there are also tourists from out of state. Here’s the Zoo schedule of events for the day. Lots going on this year!

Additional Information: This will be an outdoor event, so please dress appropriately and remember sun screen! Please do not RSVP if you’re unable to commit to the full event.

We will plan on a social activity after the event at the zoo at one of the onsite eateries, and for the over-21s who consume alcohol it seems you CAN buy drinks and walk around the zoo with them after we are done volunteering. Attendance is fully optional and attendees will be responsible for their own food and beverage costs. Full details will be announced via email closer to the event date.
